QHY178C Cool Very Noisy - Is it just me?
« on: July 08, 2018, 07:50:38 pm »
I recently purchased a QHY178C OSC cooled camera as an alternative to my DSLR (Canon 1000D). I was expecting to see less noise and more sensitivity. The camera is definitely more sensitive but the noise is terrible. I am thinking I must be doing something wrong.

I have attached a sample. This image is one I captured and tried to platesolve in SGP. PlateSolve2 was having difficulty solving it until I made a few adjustments. This is binned 2x2, gain 5, offset 50 and exposure only 30s. The camera was cooled to -15c. Since I use SGP it was captured using the ASCOM driver. Very noisy and disappointing. There is even significant amp glow. I was expecting a much better image quality from this camera.

Is this typical? What am I missing? Shouldn't a cooled CMOS Sony chip have far less noise?

Thanks
