Evaluation of multipurpose QHY174 M Cooled monochrome camera

After the evaluation of  uncooled QHY5III 174 mono, I've recently received my new
QHY5III 174 M Cooled for testing. In a nice plastic case to protect it. Inside you'll find
the camera, a 2" adaptor, Usb 3.0 cable, RJ11 (I guess ?) cable, 4 pin socket to
RJ11 adaptor, short cable adaptator for 12 V power supply and a Silicon gel socket,





It's a bigger camera compared to the little 1.25" QHY5III 174. But the cooling system
takes lot of space. Given delta max is -40°C. With a noname 12 V 6A power supply and
EZCap software, I have this result :
Sensor temperature just before cooling: 26°C
Sensor temperature after cooling down : -15°C
So delta measured with my camera :-41°C As expected.

IMX174 has a high dark current so cooling become usefull even for short exposure.
For me, as I previously noticed, cooling effect becomes visible for 2/3 seconds
exposure at high gain (70 and more). So it's useful for DSO, including with the short
exposure technique. In addition, between 5 and 10 seconds, the anti-amp glow process
is activated and effect clearly visible.

1024x768 : 205 fps (8 bits); 118  fps (16 bits)
800x600 : 257 fps (8 bits); 148 fps (16 bits)
640x480 : 316 fps (8 bits); 182 fps (16 bits)
320x240 : 572 fps (8 bits); 333 fps (16 bits)

Binning 2x : 960 x 600 : 134 fps (8 bits); 75 fps (16 bits)

PC with Intel Core I7-4770 CPU @ 3.4 Ghz - 16 Mo RAM DDR4
Windows 7 64 bits - SSD Samsung 840 EVO 500 Mo.

M20- Trifid Nebula - 3124 x 2 seconds + 383 darks last 7 July 2016.



M16- The pilars of creation - 1391 x 3 seconds + 396 darks last 9 July 2016.

Hello Alberic,

        That's interesting testing results. Especially the thermal noise under short and long exposure. Looks the long exposure test condition the thermal noise is much less than the short exposure.

        I think the reason this the anti-amp control circuit. The long exposure enabled this circuit .

Hi Qiu, :)

As far as I'm concerned I agree with you the amp glow lighting effect is seen
as a a kind of thermal noise.
So thermal noise is high under 7 seconds (anti-amp glow disable) and substancially
reduced when anti-amp glow is enabled (8 seconds and more).
The anti-amp glow is really effective for long exposure imaging, that's obvious !

New picture : M27 with QHY 174 M cooled  + Orion Optics  300 mm F/D 5.3 on EQ-6.
Last 5th of July. 

It's a mix of 1 second exposure (without anti-amp glow) and 8 seconds (with anti-amp glow
enabled).

QHY174 M (cooled -15°C) + 300 F/D 5.3 Orion Optics on EQ-6
No filter. Manual sort out. 

5573 frames 1 second exposure + 129 frames 8 seconds exposure.

1 new picture, M57, a mix of 2 pictures : one with 5 seconds exposure with T300 telescope
and QHY174 M cooled (-18°C) for bakgcround. Second one is a short exposure sequence
with 400 ms exposures with T 400 telescope and QHY5III 174 M uncooled.



And previous M27 with enhanced process to show the faint stars

Here is NGC 891 galaxy taken T400 +QHY174 M cooled at -20°C.
Each exposure is 2.5 seconds. During 2 sessions last nights.

QHY174 M ( -20°C cooled) with newtonian T 400 F/D 4.5 on LXD 750 mount
No filter. Manual sorting. Gain = 75.
(2211 + 1762) exposures; 2.5 second each;  (333 + 441) darks

Registration with DeepSkyStacker.
Precessing with Iris/Photoshop.
cosmetic processing with Photoshop.

I've tried a more difficult target, Stephan's Quintet galaxies, near NGC7331
It's a mix of pictures taken with 2 different telescopes : 300 mm Newtonian and
400 mm Newtonian.  ;)
